Accelerate innovation in your region through the formation of broad-based collaboration to support start-up firms and companies in various stages of their organizational lifecycle. This panel will support you in working with universities, entrepreneurs, small enterprises, and large industry partners that are developing new technologies and products. You will also learn more about how to effectively engage angel investors and venture capitalists in support of your region’s innovation.

Dr. Bernard L. Daina

Management and Organizational Psychology

Bernie is a licensed professionalpsychologist who has specialized in consulting on senior management selectionand effectiveness for more than 23 years, particularly to venture-backedtechnology firms and their investors. Bernie helps boards, investors andexecutives assess executive team performance. He develops strategies to improvethe team's capability by upgrading key individuals or their management andleadership practices. He brings crisp, practical insight into how the seniorteam's cognitive approach to problem solving either serves or inhibitscollective achievement. He also identifies interpersonal, cultural andpolitical dynamics that require attention. He catalyzes organizationalchanges, and contributes management processes that foster success. Hisinterventions enable key decision makers to move a business forward withgreater clarity and confidence. Amongst other activities, he hasconsulted on mergers and acquisitions in the life-sciences technologyand medical-education sectors, on the leadership and development oftechnology incubators, and on upgrading the effectiveness of NFL sports teamsand their management. Previously, Bernie was vice president in apublicly-traded biotechnology company, an Army and Air Force officer, and aresearcher with the U.S. Department of Commerce. In his spare time, he iscurrently a founding executive of a successful new web 2.0 information companyfor collectors, WorthPoint. Bernie earned his bachelor's at Rutgers College,his MS and PhD in Clinical and Consulting Psychology at Howard University,and was a Fellow at Harvard Medical School. He serves on the boardof Outward Bound and has also been a trustee of the Kempe National Foundationfor Child Abuse, amongst others.

Mark Crowell isAssociate Vice Chancellor for Economic Development and Technology Transfer atthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining UNC, he held similar positions at NorthCarolina State University and at Duke University. He has extensive experience in technology licensing,start-up company formation, seed capital development, and research campusplanning. In his UNC role, Marksits on the Boards of key economic development and entrepreneurial supportagencies in North Carolina, including the North Carolina Biotechnology Center,the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, the Research Triangle RegionalPartnership, and the Orange County Economic Development Commission. His responsibilities at UNC include theOffice of Technology Development, the Office of Economic and BusinessDevelopment, research campus program planning and business development,industry research, and international research collaboration development.


Mark was the 2005President of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and isPresident of the newly launched AUTM Foundation. He has extensive national and international speaking,consulting, and management experience related to technology transfer andinnovation-based economic development. During the past 2 years, he has made keynote addresses on these subjectsat conferences and symposia in Singapore, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, theUK, France, Austria, Russia, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Israel, Turkey, theUS, and others. His consulting andadvisory activities include a number of US and international academic andpolicy groups and associations, including the National Governors' Association,the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the NationalAcademies of Sciences, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the LosAlamos National Laboratory (chair, commercialization advisory board) and othernumerous international and state government agencies. Mark has undergraduate (B.A., international studies) andgraduate degrees (economic development/regional planning) from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Responsible for thedevelopment and implementation of committed private equity Angel funds acrossthe state to include ongoing educational programs for both investors andentrepreneurs seeking private equity investment. ROI and job creation areprimary goals. Tim is the founderof the Inception Micro Angel Family of Funds and a participant in 26 privateequity deals. In addition heserves as an adjunct professor in business law at Wake Forest University.


Tim holds anundergraduate degree in analytical chemistry from the University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill as well as a Doctorate in Law and a Masters Degree inLabor Relations from Woodrow Wilson College of Law - Oglethorpe University anda Masters of Business Administration from Wake Forest University. Prior tobeing appointed a Director with the SBTDC in 2002, Tim served as Vice PresidentAdministration for the Maybelline division of L'Oreal Paris and Vice PresidentOperations for Sara Lee Hosiery.

Alan A. Musso joinedTargacept in February 2002 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mr.Musso has over 18 years of experience in finance and accounting, withexperience gained at both established and development stage pharmaceuticalcompanies. Most recently, he was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer ofOsiris Therapeutics based in Baltimore. Previously, he served as ChiefFinancial Officer for Cato Research, a global contract research organization inDurham, N.C. At the same time, he served as CFO for Vascular Genetics Inc., agene therapy company co-founded by Cato Holding Company. In thesetechnology-focused positions, Mr. Musso was involved in capital raising,corporate partnering, finance and strategy.


Mr.Musso began his career at KPMG, serving in the San Francisco, Boston andPhoenix offices. He later served with Pfizer, first in the Corporate InternalAudit Department in New York, and then as General Accounting Manager inBarceloneta, Puerto Rico, which was then Pfizer's largest manufacturing facility.Mr. Musso also served as Director of Finance and Accounting with DuramedPharmaceuticals, based in Cincinnati, where he directed the preparation of SECand stockholder reports and supported the company's financing and businessdevelopment activities. Mr. Mussoreceived a B.S. in accounting from Saint Mary's College of California, and amaster's degree from the American Graduate School of International Managementin Glendale, Arizona.
