Mr.G. Steven Burrill

G. Steven Burrill has been involved in thegrowth and prosperity of the biotechnology industry for over 40 years. An earlypioneer, Mr. Burrill is one of the original architects of the industry and oneof its most avid and sustained developers. He currently serves as Chairman ofthe Board of Pharmasset (NASDAQ: VRUS) and is a member of the Boards ofDirectors of Catalyst Biosciences, DepoMed (NASDAQ: DEPO), Intranasal,Phytomedics, Proteogenix, Proventys, Targacept (NASDAQ: TRGT) and XDx. Prior to founding Burrill & Company in 1994, he spent 28 years with Ernst& Young, directing and coordinating the firm's services to clients in thebiotechnology/life sciences/high technology/manufacturing industriesworldwide. In 2002, Mr. Burrill was recognized as the biotech investmentvisionary by the prestigious Scientific American magazine (The ScientificAmerican 50).

 

Mr.Burrill is a founder and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of theFoundation for the National Medals of Science and Technology. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of the Board on Campaign for MedicalResearch as well as Chairman of the San Francisco Mayor's Biotech AdvisoryCommittee (MAYBAC). Other not-for-profit activities include serving onthe Boards of Directors for the Bay Area Science Infrastructure Consortium,BayBio, California Healthcare Institute, The Exploratorium, Genetics Policy Institute,The Kellogg Center for Biotechnology, Kramden Institute, The National HealthMuseum, and Research!America. He also serves as an advisor on the MITCenter for Biomedical Innovation, Purdue Discovery Park External AdvisoryCommittee as well as the editorial board of the Journal of CommercialBiotechnology.

 

Mr. Gwyn F. Riddick

Gwyn F. Riddickjoined the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in September 2003 with more than35 years of experience in the life science industry, the horticulture industryand the higher education sector. With the life science industry, Riddick manufactured and managed varioushuman and animal vaccines, diagnostics, blood products, consumer products andpharmaceuticals. While employed asfaculty at North Carolina State University, he was Guilford County Director ofthe Cooperative Extension Service. At Guilford Technical Community College, Riddick was Director ofEconomic Development and business and industry education.

 

He currentlydirects activities in the Piedmont Triad region that promote biotechnologydevelopment through community capacity building and the biotechnology Center'sgrant and loan programs to encourage research and development, entrepreneurial developmentand academic program development.

 

Riddick receivedhis BS Degree in Microbiology from The Ohio State University and an MBA ineconomics and marketing from Butler University in Indianapolis. He is a Fellow of the NaturalResource Leadership Institute and received a Certificate in Non-ProfitManagement from Duke University. He is a member of the UNCG Bryan School of Business Advisory Board and afreelance journalist on topics of ecology, environment and horticulture.

 

 

Mr. ScottSarazen

GlobalBiotechnology Markets Leader

Scott serves in therole of Markets Leader within Ernst & Young's Global Biotechnology Centerin Boston. In this role, Scott isresponsible for all aspects of the firm's global marketing, communication andgo-to-market strategies for the bioscience industries. Mr. Sarazen and the Marketing teamserve as the primary conduit between the firm and the biotechnology and medicaldevice industries for the purposes of tracking the changing landscape of thesedynamic sectors and communicating E&Y's proven value proposition. The Markets Leader also overseesthought leadership, including the production of Beyond Borders, Ernst &Young's annual report on the biotechnology industry.

 

Prior to joiningErnst & Young, Mr. Sarazen has enjoyed over 19 years of experiencesupporting biomanufacturing facilities design, strategic operations andbusiness development in the biotechnology and biomedical industries in rolesincluding: Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at Straumann, NorthAmerica and Director of Global Planning and Development at GenzymeCorporation. Scott has also servedin public economic development roles, advocating for the expansion of thebiomedical industries, as both the Senior Vice President for Life Sciences withMass Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and as a specialconsultant to the Chief Economic Development Officer for the City of Boston.

 

Mr. Sarazen holds aBachelors of Science in Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and aMasters of Science in Management from Lesley University. In addition to other affiliations,Scott serves on the Boards of: the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences andTechnology (HST); KIPP Academy in Lynn, MA; the United Way's Math, Science andTechnology After-School Initiative; the City of Boston's Life-Tech Initiative;Convergence - the Life Sciences Leaders Forum; and on the Economic DevelopmentCommittee at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council.
